Don't Open The Door:
I 'borrowed' this phrase from a Dylan Moran stand-up piece about potential that I'm particularly fond of. I admit that the choice of title is somewhat disingenuous given that this blog is really my attempt to open the door, even if I only peer around the corner and slam it shut after seeing what that brief glimpse reveals. In part I believe I chose the title because it maintains an element of fear and self-doubt in me that I'm not quite ready to shed just yet, but more importantly it acts as a reminder, in case I start to get lazy with my postings, that the intention behind starting a blog was to find my voice and, with any luck, realise some potential as a writer.
I imagine the title as a warning akin to those encountered by treasure hunters above the entrances or inside caves where treasures were hidden. These warning signs would not deter the treasure hunters, what with the potential of riches within their grasp, they would however undoubtedly proceed with caution. And yes, before you surmise as much, I am a fan of the Indiana Jones films, with the exception of the abomination that was the latest instalment.
So the door is ajar. What's behind it? I don't know as yet, it's not going to be the Magic Door of my childhood, but then Dublin Zoo is only so interesting now that I've reached the quarter century mark. What I do know is there's an undeniable excitement about opening a door without knowing what's on the other side.
